Resin bound paving involves mixing natural aggregates — such as gravel, marble or granite — with a clear polyurethane resin and trowelling the mix onto a prepared base. The result is a smooth, porous surface where the stone sits in the resin, creating an elegant, contemporary look.

Because it's fully permeable, rainwater drains straight through rather than running off. This satisfies SuDS planning requirements, meaning no additional soakaways are needed for most driveway projects.

Block paving uses individual bricks or setts — made from concrete, clay or natural stone — laid onto a compacted sub-base of MOT Type 1 hardcore and sharp sand. The blocks interlock to distribute load and can be arranged in a variety of patterns.

One of the biggest advantages is repairability: if a utility company digs up your driveway, the blocks can be lifted, work done, and the surface reinstated to as-new condition.

Tarmacadam (or tarmac) is a blend of crushed aggregate bound together with bitumen. It's rolled flat while hot to create a dense, uniform surface. Asphalt offers excellent flexibility, which means it handles freeze-thaw cycles — very common in Irish winters — better than rigid surfaces.

It's the most cost-efficient option for larger areas and can be finished with a contrast resin or block edging to add visual appeal and contain the surface edge cleanly.
